Riverboat cruising is a great alternative to traditional big ship cruising for Baby Boomers who are looking for an alternative to the large ocean-going cruise lines.  The relaxed pace and small passenger population of 200 passengers or less makes for short lines and a more intimate experience.  In addition, riverboats usually dock right at the heart of major city centers, giving passengers easy access to historic sites, restaurants, shopping and other places of interest.
An increasing number of river cruise ships have walking/jogging tracks on their top decks as well as small exercise facilities to cater to the more active traveler.  In addition, many also provide bicycles and walking sticks free of charge.  And cruise lines are increasingly putting together hiking, biking and kayaking tours for today's more adventurous traveler. Expertly guided shore excursions are offered on most river cruise lines and vary in terms of physical exertion.
Meals are included in the base price of the cruise and wine and beer with dinner along with soft drinks are usually included in the price as well.  Several cruise lines also include gratuities in the basic rate.
Europe is currently the most popular destination for river cruising with France and Germany heading the list.  There are many options for routes and length of voyage from which to choose.  In addition, themed cruises are popular and include wine and culinary voyages among others.  Itineraries range from a seven-night Seine cruise through Paris and Normandy with two nights in Paris,  an eleven night cruise from Prague to Budapest on the Danube River and an eleven night Amsterdam to Zurich cruise on the Rhine.
Looking for something more adventurous?  How about Cambodia, Vietnam and the riches of the Mekong?  Or you can head to Africa for a cruise and safari adventure, wildlife cruise or rivers and rails of Africa cruise.  Russia offers cruises from St. Petersburg and Moscow.
Cruising is a safe, easy and enjoyable choice for Baby Boomers.  You unpack once and enjoy great service, gourmet food and fabulous views along the shore while being ferried from one interesting destination to another in what for all practical purposes is a floating hotel.  It doesn't get much better or easier than that.
