Boomers are booming!

Our Calling

The following article was submitted by Geoffrey McGillen, Senior Adult Pastor at First Baptist Church, Shelbyville.

A Courier-Journal (10/1,13, p. A12) summary of a U.N. and elder rights group report regarding aging summarizes that "most countries are not prepared to support their swelling numbers of elderly people...By 2050, for the first time in history, people over 60 will outnumber children under [age] 15." (Kristin Gelineau, AP)

Nations devastated by wars in the past fifty years (Vietnam, Afghanistan, etc.) are also tripling the number of their elderly by 2050. While some economic development seems possible in their future, the workforce available to possible employers may not be able to sustain the growth needed, especially with governmental assistance.

For Christians throughout the world, we are reminded that His faithfulness "continues through all generations." (Psalm 100, NIV)  While U.S. governmental authorities instituted broad-ranging and still controversial social systems starting seventy years ago, we as Christians don’t need to count the tax that we pay for those services--whether we use them or not--as our only sacrifice for Him. We should take up His Cross and follow Him where our aged are concerned.

Following prayer, the believers in the early Acts church were "all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”  They were also "…one in heart and mind...they shared everything they had...." (Acts 4:31- 32)

Is today’s church able to do this again on behalf of our widows and orphans who are often unable to provide for themselves?

Please pray about it Baby Boomers.
